Eldercare Considerations Stifle Corporate Relocation
Being recruited or relocated by your future or current employer is often held in high regard. Companies willing to invest in your role at their organization by spending corporate relocation dollars to bring you in, usually have compelling reasons why they find value in you and your position — making you a hot commodity. Worldwide ERC® reports that companies spend $25 billion annually on U.S. corporate relocation which typically includes a comprehensive package for the transition of the relocatee. The relocation package might provide services to aid in locating a job for the trailing partner and referrals for doctors, dentists, schools, real estate professionals and much more.

There is one area in which corporate relocation services fall short and it is becoming a growing concern for employees faced with the opportunity to advance in their career. Eldercare has been identified as the second leading reason why some people choose to pass on a job which requires a substantial move. Approximately one in four workers are managing an eldercare situation but relocation specialists do not address this with support or service.

The recession brings several additional factors why the eldercare issue for those considering moving for a job have hesitation. Older adults who would normally be ready for retirement and prepared to handle the task of caring for an elder friend or relative are staying in the workforce longer to ensure their financial situation will sustain future economic needs. Secondly, many companies have cut-back corporation relocation packages and incentives therefore leaving the potential relocatee with a smaller bankroll to fund a suitable solution for the care of the elder in their life. Add to this that selling a home will yield less than it would have several years ago and the likely difficultly of finding a comparable job for the trailing partner and those faced with a relocation are left will a tough decision to make.

Relocation Resources has been helping to fill this void with a suite of resources and decision tools to aid in all aspects of a transition to a new city, including eldercare.
